Sovon Dutch Centre for Field Ornithology

SOVON Dutch Centre for Ornithology (SOVON) is a non-governmental agency which initiates national surveys of bird populations in the Netherlands. Among its core activities are monitoring of breeding, migratory and wintering birds and atlas work to assess abundance of bird populations at a national level. Fieldwork is mainly carried out by about 7500 dedicated volunteer ornithologists. Furthermore, applied scientific research is carried out for various purposes, ranging from environmental impact statements to development of key trend parameters. SOVON’s work is mainly supported by the Dutch government and several nature conservation agencies.
