The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) is based in Dhustone, Shropshire.
Founded in 1982 by Major Adrian Coles after discovering a hedgehog that was unable to escape from a cattle grid into which it had accidentally fallen, the Society now has over 10,000 members, supplies hedgehog education packs to every vet’s surgery in the UK, organises a network of hedgehog ‘carers’, provides expert speakers for wildlife events and successfully lobbies Parliament on behalf of wildlife in general and hedgehogs in particular.
CJ WildBird Foods has been privileged to work closely with the BHPS for a number of years and last year (2006) they kindly agreed to trial our Hedgehog houses and a new recipe for our Hedgehog food.
BHPS hedgehog ‘carers’ Tanis and Martin Jordan in Edgton, Shropshire, for example, are monitoring hedgehog interest in and levels of uptake of various CJ prototype house models in a trial that is expected to last several years.
Meanwhile, trials of CJ Hedgehog Foods have gone so well – and with keen relish on the part of the hedgehogs, adult and orphans alike! - that a favourite recipe has already been identified and added to our range.
Our testing and trialling activities continue with the kind support of the BHPS and its hedgehog ‘carers’.
