Butterfly box

Butterfly box type 014A

The butterfly box will provide butterflies with a place to roost and hibernate.

Species that use the box are the European Peacock Butterfly, Small Tortoiseshell and the Red Admiral.

The welfare of the butterflies should be taken into account at all times! Research must not be conducted at the expense of disturbing them.

Method:

  • Site the butterfly box in a tree or barn with a sunny aspect.
  • Do not site the box facing west - because of the rain.
  • The height for hanging is not important
  • Make sure you take a photograph of the box after hanging it.
  • The duration of the project is at least 5 years

What we would like to know

  • Is the box being occupied by butterflies?
  • If so, which species of butterfly?
  • Is the box good quality?
  • Are the holes the correct size?
  • Miscellaneous remarks.
